Navigating Through Personnel Strengths and Weaknesses in Facility Management

Though this may not be exclusive for the facility management sector in India, a Gallup study highlights how employees who make the most of their strengths in their workplace, are six times more likely to be engaged than their colleagues who seem to be lost on this crucial alignment. Positive Reinforcement helps, and studies show that 71% of the employees lose interest when their superiors focus on the weaknesses instead of their strengths.

This ought to be obvious, when we consider human nature. We are not brought to be good at everything we do. Being individuals, our tastes are distinct, and something we have been taught to appreciate. It is a matter of pride to display what we are good at, and that helps us choose a profession.

Nature of Personnel Strengths in Facility Management

Most skilled people in the facility management sector are quite good at what they do. Core strengths are identified early in their career and the ladders are chosen accordingly. Leadership and the Management play a crucial role in ensuring that the right potential reaps the right opportunities.

Considering this, it is disheartening to have the management discourage the focus on strengths and instead focus on what an individual is not good at. The Gallup study also mentioned that when managers are focused on employee strengths, 61% of the employees count themselves as engaged while only 1% of the employees stay disengaged. Well, you clearly cannot please everyone.

Nurturing a Culture of Mutual Respect

It is beneficial for the organizations to identify strengths, identify nascent potential and grooming these to their full glory. An engaged employee is a happy employee, which impacts the bottom line in a positive manner. A retained employee helps build a culture of cooperation, trust and mutual respect, which helps retain more employees, thus saving cost and reducing attrition.
